How to Setup a Wordpress Blog with Everything You Need?
Wordpress is my favorite web platform to build Blogs and Static websites on, the free themes are great, the free and paid plugins available are awesome, it’s easy to setup and the search engines tend to show these sites more.
Tools You Will Need.
1. FTP Client: This is the most important tool to have when building websites, you will use this for almost any site you make. I highly recommend “SMART FTP” it’s not free but it is the best I have used, you can use “filezilla” which is free if you don’t have the cash.
2. Themes: You should think about the layout of your site before you pick a theme, there are hundreds of free themes available just type “free wp theme” into google and you’ll see them all. Download the theme/s and save it/them to your computer for later.
3. Plugins: I use these two plugins every time on all of my blogs and I highly recommend you do to, the plugins are “Why Do Work Adsense“> (Allows you to add any javascript code and any type of content within your posts and pages on your new site) and “All in One SEO Pack“> (Helps you add keywords to your individual pages and more) download and save to your computer.
There are many other plugins to use but these two are the main ones, choose additional ones if needed.
How to Setup a Wordpress Blog
1. Install Wordpress: When you have a host that provides cPanel you can install Wordpress with one click of your button. Go to Fantastico, click “Wordpress” then fill out the details needed. Click install and your done. Hostgator offers cPanel, Highly Recommended.
2. Upload Plugins and Themes: Using your FTP client upload your theme you picked (unzip the files before you upload if needed) to “wp-content/themes/” and upload your plugins to “wp-content/plugins/”
-Now login to your WP Cpanel click “Plugins” then activate. With Wordpress 2.7.1 you can add plugins automatically in the “Plugins” section. Just click “Add New” plugin.
-To Activate your new theme click “Appearance”, click “themes” then click on the theme you uploaded.
3. Add Permalinks: I hate ugly url’s like this http://ursite.com/pg-01/ change your permalink structure so your links look like this http://ursite.com/catergory/post/ clean url’s usually get the top spots in the search engines.
To add Permalinks, Login to your WP Cpanel, go to “Settings” click “Permalinks” and add your custom permalinks, very simple.
4. Add Ping List: You can find a big list of sites to ping to here http://www.dailyblogtips.com/ping-list/ to add the list of ping sites to your blog you need to be logged in to your WP cPanel, click “settings” click “writing” scroll to the bottom then add all of the sites.
5. Add Posts and Pages: On your dashboard in your cpanel click “New Post” or “New Page” then add your pre-written content.
That’s it! This is the process I use for all of my Wordpress sites, follow the steps above and you will have your blog up in no time. Bookmark This Page.
